In 2015, the city of Ocilla began honoring R&B music legend and Ocilla native Dave Prater of the group Sam & Dave.
The first year, city officials erected highway signs along Highways 129 and 32 that greet visitors who enter from each direction.
The second year, former Sam & Dave band member Newton Collier was the guest speaker at the tribute dinner.
In 2017, the third year, organizers presented the first ever Dave Prater Music Scholarships to three Irwin County High School seniors interested in pursuing musical careers. A special treat came late on the day of the street fest: Dave Prater's former high school music teacher, Mrs. Gussie Davis Phillips, made an appearance to greet many of her former students.
